  If you got deferred from your top choice school, you’re not alone. At all. Schools are deferring students in record numbers - especially the very popular schools in the Southeast US.

• In Correspondence: Don’t Assume They Know Your Name
  If you send a Letter of Continued Interest via email, be sure and add your Date of Birth, Common App ID, or College Portal ID to your correspondence. Among thousands of applicants, there are plenty of duplicate names. (The same goes if you have someone outside of your school send an addition Letter of Recommendation. Make sure you provide them with your birthday or ID.)

• Parents: Supporting Your Teen if They’re Deferred or Denied

  Seeing your child disappointed is hard. And when it comes to college admissions, emotions are intense. So, what can you do to support your student if they get unwanted news?

  👉 Don’t freak out. Your calm confidence will anchor them. Your distress will only fuel negativity.

  👉 Validate their feelings, without jumping in with advice.

• Keep Checking Your Applicant Portals!
  Once you apply, colleges shift communication to their applicant portals…including admissions decisions. It’s not uncommon for students to have an acceptance letter sitting in their portal for weeks without realizing it! On the flip side, missing a document request or deadline can delay review. Set a reminder to check portals weekly (or more).
