It’s something called Academic Fit - and it’s a huge component for admissions officers at highly selective colleges. In fact, showing academic fit for a competitive major could mean the difference between an Acceptance or Rejection for programs such as Engineering, Business, or Nursing. Will the New American Pope Impact Admissions Rates?

Many Americans were thrilled when the Vatican selected the first American Pope. This choice will have huge impacts for years to come, but one of the most surprising might be how Pope Leo XIV will impact admission rates at his alma mater, Villanova University.

Why? Whenever a school is in the national or international spotlight (for a GOOD reason), an increase in applications typically follows.

For example, after winning the National Championship in Football in 2024, University of Michigan saw an 11% increase in applications, receiving a record-breaking 115,000 applications for admission for the Fall of 2025.

And when applications go up, admission rates go down. Simply put - the more applicants, the tougher the competition.

Why does this matter to you? It’s important to realize that admission rates can fluctuate as colleges are in the spotlight or simply grow more popular. So, be sure you’re building a balanced college list with a mix of reach, target, and likely schools.

And…if you’re really interested in Villanova University - this would be a good year to seriously consider applying Early Decision, where the admission rate tends to hover around 50% versus the 24% rate for regular decision.
